The first Optoelectronics Week - SEMOPTO was held in November 1991 and its purpose was to provide the exchanging of information among researchers, students and professionals involved with that technology. Since then, the event has had the participation of enterprises such as CPqD/Telebrás, Telemig (Telemar), ABC-XTAL, CTBC (Grupo Algar), Fotônica, AsGa, Microeletrônica, AGC Optosystem, Shachin Cury, Lucent Technologies, Leucotron and institutions like CTA-ITA, Unicamp, Unesp, CETUC-RJ, CEFET-PR, UFMG and EFEI (Unifei).
In 1998, the SEMOPTO became in international and biennial event, with the participation of German, Chilean, Canadian, Italian and French lecturers, as well as Brazilian specialists.
In 2000, its name was changed to Telecommunications International Week and the event was a unique opportunity to bring together national and international specialists to discuss the most update subjects of telecom.
In 2004 the conference became the International Workshop on Telecommunication and it brought to INATEL important keynote speakers, such as Prof. Dr. Pascal Lorenz, Ethevaldo Siqueira and Prof. Dr. Antônio Alfredo F. Loureiro. Several papers and tutorials have also been presented in 10 different technical sections. IWT'2004 has offered a business center where the participants could display their products and services, besides a varied tourist and cultural activities in the South of Minas Gerais State.
The IWT'2007 was the second issue of the workshop, and it served as a forum for information and ideas exchange. 54 technical papers, authored by researchers from 6 different countries, were presented in 9 technical sessions. They were selected from the 109 papers submitted from 9 different countries, by 55 reviewers from all over the world. Finally, four tutorials and three invited talks, given by leading scientists in their field of expertise, covered the main hot topics.
